The West Bengal state board Class XII results will be prepared on the basis of students’ performance in Class X board examinations, marks of Class XI annual examinations and  Class XII practical and project work, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education announced on Friday.

Forty percent weightage will be given on Class X board examination but the scores in only the best four subjects will be taken into account. In West Bengal, Class X board exam students are tested on seven compulsory subjects. In addition to the Class X board marks, 60 percent weightage will be given on students’ performance in Class XI annual examinations.

The practical examinations for the 2021 Class XII batch were conducted in the schools in offline mode and the schools have also submitted students’ project work marks to the council.

“The three components — Class X board marks, Class XI exams and Class XII practical and project work marks will be used for calculating the final marks,” Mahua Das, the council president said announcing the formula.

The Class XII practical exams are held in laboratory-based subjects. The theory component in the laboratory-based subjects carries 70 marks out of total 100 and the remaining 30 marks are allotted in practical. In non-laboratory subjects, 20 out of the total 100 marks are allotted in project works and the remaining 80 marks in theory.

For preparing the 2021 Class X (Madhyamik) results, 50 per cent weightage will be given on Class IX performance of students. Equal weightage will be given on students’ internal assessment scores in Class X,  Kalyamoy Ganguly, president, West Bengal Board of Secondary Education said announcing the decision today.

In Madhyamik, 10 marks out of total 100 are allotted for internal assessment of students in each subject. The final (Class X) board exam on every subject is held on 90 marks.   

The results of the two examinations will be announced in July, the officials of the two boards said today.

The secondary board and the higher secondary council will conduct written tests for those unhappy with the marks awarded to them using the said formula. The written examinations will be conducted by the two boards with the approval of the state government when the situation is conducive.

Those who opt to write the written test will have to surrender their mark sheets and their performance in the said written exam will be final.

The state government had cancelled the Madhyamik (Class X) and Higher Secondary (Class XII) examinations of 2021 in view of the Covid- 19 situation on June 7.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had said the decision to scrap the examinations was taken after examining the feedback received from students, parents and the general public.

A six-member expert committee had been constituted by the state government to suggest suitable methods for assessing the students.

Nearly 21 lakh examinees have been enrolled in the two state board exams this year including around 13 lakh in Madhyamik and nine lakh in Higher Secondary.
