The Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), the first medical college in the state, officially commenced its operations on Friday with the induction of its inaugural batch of 100 students.

Speaking at the induction ceremony held on the institute’s campus in Phriebagie, Kohima, Chief Secretary J Alam emphasized that this moment signifies not only the start of an academic session but, more significantly, the realization of a long-standing aspiration for the state to establish a medical college.

He expressed the importance of this development for the entire state, highlighting that it marks the beginning of a transformative journey that will shape the future of healthcare in Nagaland. Alam acknowledged that the establishment of the medical college was a collective aspiration of the people.

Alam encouraged the 45-member faculty of the institute to actively contribute to building an institution of excellence. He also urged the students to work diligently, emphasizing their future roles in positively impacting countless lives and reducing healthcare disparities. He assured that the government would extend full support to develop the institute into one of the finest in the country.

Dr. Soumya Chakraborty, the dean-cum-director of NIMSR, revealed that the first batch comprises 100 MBBS students, with 85 hailing from Nagaland and 15 from other regions of the country.

Ritu Thurr, the Principal Director of Health and Family Welfare, welcomed the students and stressed the importance of preparation, self-discipline, and sacrifice in achieving success. She emphasized that hard work is irreplaceable and that it leads to greater opportunities.
