A 15-year-old boy in Arunachal Pradesh allegedly died by suicide a day after being asked to leave school for using a mobile phone, which was against the rules, an officer reported on Tuesday.

The body of Chirang Kri, a Class 10 student, was discovered hanging from a tree near the Lohit river, close to his school in Amliang, Anjaw district, on Monday, according to Superintendent of Police Rike Kamsi.

The school’s principal, TM Sathian, called the incident “very unfortunate” and noted that the issue had been resolved, allowing Chirang to continue at the school. The reason for Chirang’s extreme step remains unknown.

Chirang’s family filed a complaint against the principal and hostel warden at Hayuliang police station, seeking an investigation into the circumstances of his death.

Police said Chirang, who lived in the school hostel, was caught using a mobile phone on campus, which was prohibited. The school had asked his father to withdraw him from the institution. During a meeting with school management on June 23, Chirang, accompanied by his father, requested to stay, and after further discussions, he was allowed to continue his studies.

However, on the afternoon of June 23, Chirang went missing. A search ensued, and his body was found the next day. A suicide note in his pocket apologized for using the mobile phone and asked for forgiveness. Police are verifying the note’s authenticity with handwriting experts.

Principal Sathian confirmed that everything had been settled with Chirang’s father and expressed deep sorrow over the incident. The school is cooperating fully with the police investigation. The boy’s body was handed over to his family after completing all legal formalities, according to Hayuliang police station officer-in-charge P Gami.
