A group of pediatricians has urged the Maharashtra government to stop including sugary food items in school midday meals. In a letter to state school education minister Deepak Kesarkar, the Maha Academy of Pediatrics warned that these foods could increase the risk of diabetes and obesity among children. The letter referenced a government resolution (GR) mandating that rice pudding be served with added sugar four times a week under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman Yojana (formerly the midday meal scheme).

The GR specifies adding 25 grams of sugar for students in Classes I to V and 45 grams for those in Classes VI to VIII. Dr. Ramgopal Chejara, president of the Maha Pediatrics Association, noted that students already consume additional sugary foods throughout the day, which could lead to health issues. The group has appealed to the government to reconsider the inclusion of sugary items in the meals.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve also criticized the government, questioning the rationale behind providing excess sugar to schoolchildren while the Union government imposes restrictions on ethanol production.
